Composting Humanure

Starting Our First Compost Bin

This is the start of our bins for composting human manure. Doug, my renter in my tiny house just leveled the ground and created our first bin for composting the human manure. They are using an Air Head Compost toilet in my tiny house  rental and they just had to empty the solid waste after they  have been using it for almost a month.

The Air Head Compost Toilet Emits No Odor

The Air Head comes with a cool crank that can be used to mix the manure with the saw dust. You only flush with a lever when there is solid activity. It is so nice, because the lever drops the solids below and you do not have to see it. There is no odor at all.

Rain Water Barrel To Clean Out Solid Waste Container

The urine goes into a diver-tor and when it is  full it is emptied in a trash can on wheels that is nearby. I will add more pictures as he progresses. We are going to add a rainwater barrel to collect water to clean the solid waste container out and more bins. It is covered with straw and we will also be adding worms soon.

Update

The last picture shows a second compost pile that Doug just added. It will be a compost pile that has no human waste in in. We will put food scraps, egg shells, paper, grass clippings, etc…. I wanted the second one so we would could use the compost after the worms turn it into beautiful soil.  It only takes a few months.

Each state has different laws, but in Wa state, you cannot use human manure until it has composted for one year.
